Despite the need for dental care during pregnancy, too many pregnant teens and women are not getting the care they need. Obstacles hindering access to care during pregnancy include, but are not limited to:
- Lack of dentists who will see pregnant patients without prior medical consent,
- Lack of coordination of care between medical and dental providers, and
- Awareness and consistent messaging about the safety of dental care during pregnancy.
The Coordinated Care for Pregnant Teens and Women, an initiative by the Children’s Oral Health Coalition (COHC), is working with cross-sector community partners to prioritize access to care during pregnancy by reducing barriers.
